ABOUT ME

NeerjaAggarwal_23-05-17_1398_favorite.jpg

I believe engineering is empowerment. It’s my path towards creating a healthier world. And when it comes to making an impact, people are half the equation.

I was originally born in Delhi, India, and my family immigrated to Houston, Texas when I was four years old.  I was the only "science-y one" in a large business/entrepreneurial extended family and learned to forge my own path.  I studied both Electrical Engineering and Theatre Arts at MIT completing a Bachelors and Masters. After gaining product experience in the medical device industry for a year, I am now pursuing my Ph.D. at UC Berkeley in the Computational Imaging Lab.  My vision is to develop and commercialize imaging technology that can improve women's health and fight climate change (#dreams).  I believe in "additionality" - making your own unique contribution to the world.

I have rock strong fundamentals across physics, biology, chemistry, & computation.  Whether it's cells or radios, I see all problems through a signals and systems framework. I am fascinated by how light interacts with matter (expertise in electro-optics, spectroscopy, imaging). I love tackling new disciplines and challenges. I have experience in building hardware across medical, energy, & consumer industries.  I can communicate across scientific, clinical, engineering (electrical, mechanical, software, systems) teams.

I am also a creative director and transformational leader. I have directed several theatrical performances, leading teams of 30 people. I founded Voltage, the electrical engineering club at MIT, which still continues to today. I am fortunate to serve as MIT 2016 Alumni Class President and enable connections around the world.  I hope I can use these skills to lead engineering teams one day.

My parents taught me to keep service as an essential part of life and enjoy life to the fullest.  I previously volunteered as a youth coach for middle school ultimate frisbee through the Bay Area Disc Association and continue to mentor girls through Big Brother Big Sisters of Bay Area & Girl Scouts of Nor Cal.   I am enjoying the outdoors in California with lots of skiing and windsurfing.  I'm an avid member of the Cal Sailing Club in Berkeley.  I also have a huge extended family and global friends network I love traveling to visit.

WHAT I'M DOING NOW:

I am now pursuing a Ph.D. in the Computational Imaging Lab at UC Berkeley under Professor Laura Waller. I am building my skills in computation (optimization, machine learning, etc) and tech entrepreneurship to complement my expertise in electro-optics.   I am looking for collaborators in hyperspectral imaging for biomedicine and environmental monitoring.

I also mentor several undergraduate students as a research or academic mentor. I am excited to learn more about tech transfer - taking technology out of the lab and turning it into companies/products. I hope to live in Barcelona for a summer doing research and tour Japan. If you can help with any of the above, please contact me!
